Mountains & Trekking in Nepal

Eight of the world's fourteen highest peaks sit inside Nepal's borders. These ten entries cover the country's best-known summits, base camps and multi-day treks, each listed with its highest trekked or summit elevation.

01

Mount Everest (Sagarmatha)

8,849 MSOLUKHUMBU

The highest point on Earth and the centrepiece of Sagarmatha National Park. Most travellers experience it not by summiting but by trekking to a viewpoint such as Kala Patthar, where the full south face comes into view at sunrise.

02

Everest Base Camp

5,364 MKHUMBU REGION

The classic two-week trek from Lukla follows the Dudh Kosi valley through Sherpa villages, monasteries and suspension bridges before reaching the rock-strewn camp beneath the Khumbu Icefall.

03

Kala Patthar

5,644 MKHUMBU REGION

A short, steep climb above Gorak Shep that gives the best accessible view of Everest's summit pyramid — most EBC trekkers add this side trip for sunrise.

04

Annapurna Base Camp

4,130 MANNAPURNA, KASKI

A shorter, greener trek than Everest, climbing through rhododendron forest into a natural amphitheatre ringed by Annapurna I, Machapuchare and Hiunchuli.

05

Annapurna Circuit & Thorong La

5,416 MMANANG–MUSTANG

A multi-week loop crossing from lush Marsyangdi valley villages to the arid Mustang plateau, via the high-altitude Thorong La pass, one of the world's highest trekked passes.

06

Poon Hill

3,210 MMYAGDI, ANNAPURNA

A popular short trek from Nayapul, best known for its sunrise viewpoint over Dhaulagiri and the Annapurna range — a good introduction to Himalayan trekking for first-timers.

07

Langtang Valley

3,870 MRASUWA

The closest major trekking region to Kathmandu, following the Langtang Khola through pine forest and yak pastures to the glacier-rimmed village of Kyanjin Gompa.

08

Upper Mustang

3,840 MMUSTANG

A restricted, permit-only trans-Himalayan region resembling the Tibetan plateau, with red-walled monasteries, cave dwellings and the walled city of Lo Manthang.

09

Manaslu Circuit

5,106 MGORKHA

A quieter alternative to Annapurna, circling the eighth-highest mountain in the world through Gurung and Tibetan-influenced villages before crossing the Larkya La pass.

10

Kanchenjunga Base Camp

5,143 MTAPLEJUNG

A remote, multi-week trek to the base of the world's third-highest peak, through some of Nepal's least-visited valleys and rhododendron forest.
